<HOW & WHY>
PRO.W.L was created to be an alternative mail system for Wildcat
BBS'. It runs under the echomail standard an as such, functions with
all Wildcat BBS's who run a front end mailer such as D'Bridge, Front
Door, or BinkleyTerm and use a mail tosser such as Wildmail.
Most Fidonet echo mail areas are strictly governed and run by a
moderator who administers the "rules". Our rules in PRO.W.L are quite
simple. They follow what we consider to be common courtesy and good
judgement on the users part. PRO.W.L was created with the USER in mind
and allows them to carry on quite normal conversations with others in
the PRO.W.L network. The discussions have ranged from abortion and
politics to a simple hello! It is a very FRIENDLY message base.
PRO.W.L is still in it's infancy, and we ask that you encourage your
users to participate in the conferences designated with a *PROWL* tag
in your conference description. This is how we are able to identify the
message areas that will be echoed to the other PRO.W.L Network BBS's.
<CONF DESCRIPTIONS IN MAKEWILD>
Below is an example of the conference descriptions that you might
want to follow. Remember, these are ONLY ideas and NOT necessarily
the descriptions you will be using. However, we do ask that the
*PROWL* tag is indeed left somewhere in the description for the
message area.

<CONF TOGGLES IN MAKEWILD>
Below is an example of how the toggles would be set for an area that
allows the use of an ALIAS. Please note, you should toggle ALL *PROWL*
areas on the "VALID NAME ONLY" to N to make certain the users do not
need the exact name of a user on another PRO.W.L Network BBS.
┌──────────────────────────────── TOGGLES ───────────────────────────┐
│ Allow message attachments N Allow return receipts N │
│ Prompt to kill received messages N Remove extra time N │
│ Allow high ascii characters Y Allow private messages Y │
│ Allow message carbon copies N Force all messages private N │
│ Valid name only N Use alias names Y │

<ORIGIN LINES>
Wildmail v2.0 and higher has the ability to have unique origin lines
per conference area in Wildcat! In the *PROWL* conference areas you
will be carrying, I recommend that you add these specialized origins
so that the users have an idea as to where they are conversing. As an
example, below is what my origin reads for ALL of the *PROWL* areas:
--- WM v2.02/91-0191
* Origin: The Freezing Point - Mpls, MN - Home of *PROWL* - 1:282/85
This is very helpfull in notifying where the message "origin" is from.
Also keep in mind that the ORIGIN line CAN NOT be longer than the
designated maximum in Wildmail. This must not exceed 60 characters!
An example of an actuall ORIGIN.001 (for conference 1) would be:
The Freezing Point - Mpls, MN - Home of *PROWL* - (1:282/85)
This is all that is needed in the ORIGIN.### file. These origin files
MUST be placed in the SAME directory directory as the .MSG/.IX files
for that given conference.
<ALIASES>
Some of you have chosen to allow Aliases for your users. This is
indeed a supported feature in the PRO.W.L Network. However the use of
aliases are only supported in designated *PROWL* message areas. This
is to ensure the users get to know each other on a real name basis and
also allows them to speak with an Alias in several areas they might not
normally participate. Please be sure that your MAKEWILD settings ONLY
allow the use of ALIASES in the designated areas.
<PRIVATE MESSAGES>
With the addition of WILDMAIL v2.xx dated 12-02-91 (NOT 12-01-91)
and newer, the ability to toss private messages found in the *PROWL*
areas, is now a reality. We recommend that you toggle the MAKEWILD
settings for ALL the *PROWL* areas to allow PRIVATE messages. This will
give the users not only a means of carrying on public conversations,
but also allow them the pleasure to discuss in private, whatever they
desire. Please inform your users that they may indeed echo their
private messages to the other PRO.W.L Network systems.
<ADULT DISCUSSIONS>
Currently we do have an area that is designated for ADULTS only and
may add more. The Freezing Point assumes NO RESPONSIBILITY for any
actions taken against you or your users in regards to the adult
topics and/or conversations that may transpire in these areas. It will
be left solely up to your discretion as to how you allow access to
these areas. We do recommend, but do not require, that you receive a
copy of a valid ID from your users who would like adult access to your
BBS. Again, this is only a recommendation and NOT policy. How you run
your BBS is strictly up to you.
<WHAT DOES IT COST>
NOTHING! except for your phone calls. PRO.W.L is a completely FREE
volunteer Network and only exists for the benefit of the users on our
systems. We ask that if you are a Donation BBS, that you allow the
*PROWL* areas even to the non-donating users on your system.
<WHO>
If you have any questions or want to get set up on a PRO.W.L Network
and possibly become a HUB for your area please contact Ron Woods (info
given below) or another system located in the PROWLLOC.LST and leave
a message. At the time of this writing, we are looking for sysops who
would like to be a HUB for PRO.W.L in their state or region. Ideally
we need at least one in each state. This would involve your collecting
mail from the various PRO.W.L Network systems in your area or region
and then forwarding the mail to The Freezing Point.
<WHEN>
If you have taken on the responsibility of an active HUB for the
PRO.W.L network, we ask that you be willing to poll The Freezing Point
BBS for mail transfer at least twice a week. Systems operating under
you in your local area or region may wish to poll daily. But with the
expense of long distance phone bills we do understand and do not want
to burden the already high expense involved with running a BBS. Keep
in mind that we do operate with a U.S. Robotics Dual Standard and that
transfer times should last for only a few minutes or less if you have
at least a 9600 baud modem. We may decide to extend the Zone Mail hour
for another hour and designate this time for the PROWL transfer hour.
This will depend on the amount of traffic that is recieved in the
oncoming months.
<COMMENTS>
Your thoughts and comments are always welcome and very much
appreciated. We would like to see PROWL take off and become a valuable
and active part of your message base. In order for this to happen, we
NEED your ideas and input. Any concerns, ideas or questions may be
forwarded to the following:
